Run Shadyside October 5th
Run Shadyside is this Saturday! Over 1,000 people have already registered for the 5K run and 1 mile walk that supports the Shadyside Boys & Girls Club.
It’s like a fast-moving house tour. Run along nice paved roads through the streets of Shadyside. The course begins at 8am the intersection of Walnut and Ivy and takes you through residential and commercial streets of our neighborhood. You can get more information on the event’s website.
Packet Pickup will be held at TrueRunner (5407 Walnut St Pittsburgh, PA 15232) on October 3rd from 6 PM to 9 PM and on October 4th from 10 AM to 8 PM.
Blessing of the Animals & Pet Walk with Bark Shadyside
Bring your well bahaved pets to receive interfaith blessings in honor of the Feast of St. Francis of Asis, Patron Saint of Animals. We’ll have many pet vendors, activities and giveaways. There will also be an Animal Psychic available for readings!
Check in and day-of registration begins at 11am on Bellefonte Street. The Pet Walk will start at noon. Cost is $10 per dog ($5 per additional dog/$15 day of).

Shadyside Action Coalition (SAC)
Shadyside Action Coalition has monthly general meetings on the 2nd Thursday of each month, 6:30-8pm, in the Winchester Thurston School Board Room (Morewood entrance). Come to the next meeting OCTOBER 10th. We hear updates from the zone police, district councilman’s office, mayor’s office, and local development groups. Come to meet your neighbors and be part of your neighborhood.

October is Bullying Prevention Month
The University School & AERI BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES promotes creating safer schools and accepting communities. Lesson plans this month will focus on bullying prevention, in particular, we will focus on cyber-bullying and learn what not to say on social media.
The University School will host an Open House for the Community-At-Large on Thursday 24 October, from 5:00 PM until 7:00PM.

Guardian Storage is hosting a community Shred-It event, free and open to the public! Local residents and businesses may bring paper items they would like securely shredded to 5873 Centre Ave on Saturday October 26th from 12pm to 4pm. The Health Care Marketplace is Open
The Affordable Care Act (aka “Obamacare”) is being fully implemented in January 2014. Open enrollment for the individual and small business Federal Marketplace began on October 1, 2013. Individuals can now apply online and small businesses will have access to apply online to the SHOP exchange starting November, 1 2013.

Panera Bread Go Pink Campaign
Panera Bread will kick off their “Come Together for a Cause” campaign which will raise money for Breast Cancer by selling Pink Ribbon Bagels during the month of October. The 29 Pittsburgh area Panera Bread bakery-cafes will donate 100% of the proceeds on October 1st and a portion of the proceeds October 2nd-31st to The Young Women’s Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation (YWBCAF), Magee Women’s Research Institute & Foundation, and The Cancer Caring Center. For the past five years, YWBCAF was the recipient of all the funds raised through the “Go Pink” Pink Ribbon bagel campaign. This year Panera Bread and YWBCAF wanted to “come together for a cause” with some other charities in hopes of making a bigger impact on the Pittsburgh market.

Join Morgan Contemporary Glass Gallery on Friday October 4 during FirstFriday ArtWalk to see common discourse, the new fall exhibition that opened last week. Common Discourse features the work of two local artists-Heather Joy Puskarich and Ron Desmett- along with Jen Blazina, Michael Janis, Susan Longini, Carmen Lozar, Demetra Theofanous and Randy Walker.
Heather Joy’s Heautoscopic Jaunt, a life-size chocolate casting of her body, is featured in this exhibition. Also on display are Ron Desmett’s Lidded Trunk Vessels, which are created by blowing glass into unusual hollowed out tree trunks.
