What’s New in Shadyside – May 2014

Pittsburgh Marathon this Sunday!

The Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon will be taking over the city this Sunday, and we can’t wait to see all the runners come through Shadyside! We’ll have a cheer station on Bellefonte Street at Walnut with complimentary refreshments provided by the Coffee Tree Roasters and Prantl’s Bakery available to all spectators.

Fitness stores like Lululemon, Athleta and True Runner will also be cheering on the runners along Walnut Street. We expect the fastest runners to start coming through around 8:00am.

Find out everything you need to know about the Marathon, including street closures, on their website.

Warm Weather Walks

As Spring arrives, mark your calendars for Warm Weather Walks, our FirstFriday ArtWalks on Ellsworth Avenue from May through September. The Summer gallery crawls series kicks off on May 2nd from 5:30-8:30 p.m., and will feature live music shopping at local businesses and food trucks along the route. Make sure to visit the galleries on Ellsworth: Gallerie Chiz, Morgan Glass Gallery and Mendelson Gallery  to view their permanent collections and special openings throughout the Summer.

Start at the intersection of Ellsworth and Maryland Avenues, and work your way up to the Pedestrian Bridge. Located just beyond the bridge is the Steel City Improv Theater, which will put on a performance at 8 p.m. for each of the Warm Weather Walks.  More details can be found here

The news you’ve been waiting for!

The Shadyside Action Coalition’s 2014 House Tour date is Sunday, September 21st. This ever popular self-guided tour is from 11:00-5:00. Tickets will be able to be purchased through the store section of SAC’s website beginning in August. We hope you will join us!

Don’t miss SAC’s informational CPR event on Saturday, May 17th from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM. This will be held in the Willis Auditorium in the new Upper School at Winchester Thurston School on Morewood Avenue.  KDKA anchorwoman Susan Koeppen who suffered a cardiac episode two years ago along with the owner of Start the Heart and a Veternarian will speak to you about the importance of CPR and show you the basics of performing CPR. We will be signing people up for an actual 3 hour course in July to teach people how to perform CPR on humans and pets. You will then be certified in performing CPR. You never know when you will encounter a situation where YOU could save someone’s life. You won’t want to miss this!

It is through our House Tour and membership that we are able to continue to operate and be the voice of the neighborhood. Please join or renew your membership today!

Please email info@shadysideaction.org if you have any questions.

An Evening of Arts for Autism

The Arts for Autism Foundation’s annual fundraiser, An Evening of Arts for Autism, was held on Friday, March 25th at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater.  It is with sincere gratitude that the Arts for Autism recognizes Emcee Dan Gilman and members of the Shadyside Chamber of Commerce for their contributions to this event. Nearly $11,000 was raised! Every dollar will be translated into scholarship funding for Pittsburgh’s Joey Travolta Film Camp, a summer program for adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorders.

Rising Phoenix AwardsPhoenix Award

May 12 is the two-year anniversary of Journeys of Life return to their original location on Bellefonte after the devastating fire of October 2011. The rebuilding and eventual reopening was likened to the story from Greek mythology of the phoenix rising from the ashes. This long-lived bird is said to be cyclically reborn, obtaining new life by rising from the ashes of its predecessor. Journeys rose from the ashes of the original charred store only to be reborn stronger, more focused and resolved in their mission.

In honor of this occasion we are accepting nominations for the second annual Order of the Rising Phoenix award, given to someone in the community who has overcome tremendous physical, emotional or mental hardship. We are now accepting nominations for the 2014 award. Please send your nomination for this award to jean@journeysoflife.com. Tell us why you feel this person exemplifies the cycle of the phoenix and the efforts necessary to rise from the ashes. The award will be announced during the June 25th anniversary celebration at Journeys.

Update your Denim

As you probably know, there is nothing quite like a great pair of jeans.  Fringed, half leather, high wasted, cropped… nothing quite brings on the ease like that cotton twill.  Light, dark, black, white… match it with a t-shirt or dress it up with a blouse. Skinny jeans distressed in all the right places, shows the right kind of flare. Low-on-the-hip fit are the summer bound denim. Get the jeans you’re looking for at Dina Ellen.
